I. The Warden Below
Far beneath the jagged, soot-stained mountain range known as the Ashen Teeth, there lay a kingdom of silence. This was not a dungeon carved by the crude tools of men, but a labyrinth hollowed out by the patient gnawing of time, the fury of ancient magmatic rivers, and a geometry far older than the stars.
The air here did not move; it settled, heavy with the scent of ozone and cooling basalt. Vaulted caverns stretched for miles, their ceilings lost in a haze of sulfurous mist. Along the walls, glowing lichen traced patterns that resembled weeping eyes, illuminating iron doors that had been fused shut by the heat of a thousand years. It was a place where the weight of the world felt literal, pressing down on every echo.
At the absolute heart of this sunless realm lived Vaelor.
He was a monument of iron-black scales, each one the size of a warrior’s shield and scarred by the memory of a hundred forgotten wars. His wings, once great sails that could blot out the moon, were now tattered banners draped over mounds of cooling slag. One of his horns had been sheared off mid-length, a jagged stump that served as a reminder of the day the gods themselves had tried to evict him.
To the villages nestled in the foothills above, he was the Gloom-Bringer, a monster of myth to keep children from wandering too deep into the mines. They spoke of his greed and his fire with trembling breath. But they were wrong. Vaelor didn't care for their gold, and his fire was not a weapon of conquest. He was the lock on a door they didn't know existed. He was the Warden of the Deep, and in ten thousand years, he had never once abandoned his post.
